What this programme is

The University of St Andrews Business School’s MSc Management is a one-year, full-time taught master’s starting in September, with a single published application deadline of 5 August 2027 for the 2027 intake.¹ The structure is conventional and clearly stated: six compulsory modules — Corporate Finance and Accounting, Managing Human Resources, Managing and Organising for Grand Challenges, Marketing: Principles and Practice, Reimagining Management and Organisation Studies, and Strategic Management — two optional modules, one in each semester, and a 15,000-word dissertation written over the summer with a supervisor assigned from a proposal submitted in semester two.¹ Teaching groups “range from 15 to 60 students”, and there is a PGDip exit award for candidates who complete the taught element but not the dissertation.¹

It is one of seven taught master’s programmes the Business School runs, alongside Accounting and Finance, Banking and Finance, Entrepreneurship, Finance and Management, International Business and Marketing.⁸ The programme is accredited by the Chartered Management Institute, which makes successful graduates eligible to apply for the CMI Level 7 Diploma in Strategic Management and Leadership Practice and Foundation Chartered Manager status — a professional credential on top of the degree, and a genuinely uncommon feature in this catalogue.¹

The entry requirement that makes this programme unusual

Almost every programme on this site competes for the same applicant: a business, economics or management graduate with a strong average. St Andrews rules that applicant out. The stated requirement is “a 2.1 undergraduate Honours degree in a subject other than business or management from the UK or the equivalent international qualification”, and the page adds, in the same breath, that “students with a background in business or management are advised to consider the International Business (MSc) or the Marketing (MSc)”.¹

That is the exact mirror image of the constraint that shapes most of this catalogue. At Southern Denmark the gate is 75 ECTS of prior business study; at St Andrews, prior business study is the thing that sends you elsewhere. For a graduate of history, engineering, biology, law or languages who wants a management qualification, the practical consequence is worth stating plainly: you are not competing against economics majors here, because they are not eligible. The rest of the field is in the MiM without a business degree.

Only one other programme in this catalogue does the same thing, and the comparison is the useful part. Cambridge’s MPhil in Management also requires an undergraduate degree “in a subject other than business or management” — but it asks for a First, and, as our Cambridge profile records from the school’s own page, it takes applicants only within a year of graduating. St Andrews asks for a 2.1, and its entry requirements state no recency rule. So of the two exclusively-conversion masters on this site, St Andrews is the reachable one, and it is the obvious second application for anyone whose Cambridge file is a stretch on the degree class or too late on the clock.

Two cautions before you read that as an easy door. The 2.1 Honours bar is a real one at a highly selective university, and the per-country equivalences that decide what your degree converts to are served from a JavaScript selector the page does not render to a fetcher, so we cannot publish them here — check them yourself on the programme page before assuming your grades clear. And St Andrews warns in its own words that *“obtaining the listed entry requirements will not guarantee you a place, as the University takes a holistic view of every application.”*¹

No GMAT or GRE is named anywhere in either the entry requirements or the application requirements, so on the published wording an admissions test is not a described step. The file itself is short: a CV, a 500-word personal statement, one original signed academic reference, transcripts and degree certificates — and *“a sample of academic writing is not required for this programme.”*¹

The English-language rule most applicants will not expect

This is the paragraph on this page most likely to change what somebody does, and it applies to the countries that send the most applicants to UK business master’s programmes.

St Andrews accepts a degree taught in English as evidence of language ability directly if it comes from the UK, Ireland, the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand or the other UKVI majority-English-speaking countries, or from a nationally accredited English-medium institution in Hong Kong, Singapore or South Africa.⁴

For a degree from India, Pakistan, Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe, the Philippines, Mauritius and around twenty other listed countries and territories, it does not. St Andrews requires a verified ECCTIS Qualification Language Service report — a UPI number and the downloaded result — “confirming the level of English language required for this qualification is equivalent to CEFR Level C1”, and states in as many words that *“statements indicating that a degree programme meets the requirements of CEFR level B1 or B2 are not acceptable.”*⁴

Three practical consequences:

1. It costs money and time. ECCTIS is a paid third-party verification service, and its comparison can only be obtained *“where you have completed your degree — it cannot be used if you are still studying for your degree.”*⁴ An applicant in their final year cannot use this route at all and will need a test score instead.
2. There is a second door for some. A degree taught in English from a country not on the majority-English list can also be accepted if “the awarding institution features in the top 300 of current QS University Rankings”, with verified evidence from the institution that you personally were taught in English.⁴
3. The accepted test scores themselves are unreadable at source. Like the grade equivalences, the IELTS and TOEFL minimums sit behind a JavaScript selector on the programme page, so this profile does not quote them.¹ Ask the School, or read them in a browser.

Money — and a fee that has not been set yet

St Andrews has not priced the intake this page’s own deadline admits to. The 2027-entry programme page states, for UK and Rest of the World alike, *“Tuition fees have yet to be set.”*¹ Everything below is therefore the University’s approved 2026-2027 schedule, which is the latest it publishes, and should be read as a floor rather than as a quote.

Management sits in Postgraduate Taught Band B, the more expensive of the two bands, with Finance, Economics and International Relations:²

The shape of that series is the useful part: a flat year followed by a ~4.9% step. If 2027-2028 moves similarly, an overseas applicant should be budgeting somewhere above GBP 33,000 rather than the GBP 31,450 on the table today.

Two charges sit outside tuition and appear on neither the table nor most comparison sites:

• A GBP 50 application fee, which St Andrews requires “in order for us to begin processing your application”.³ It is waived for UK-domiciled applicants who received a means-tested undergraduate award, first-generation applicants, care-experienced applicants, those from national widening-access schemes and those with caring responsibilities; for applicants holding an Asylum Registration Card or the relevant Biometric Residence Permit; and — the clause most likely to matter to readers of this site — for *“applicants who are domiciled in low-income countries and territories as defined by the OECD least-developed and low-income country and territory and World Bank low-income country and territory lists.”*³ Check the lists before you pay.
• A one-off GBP 20 digital documentation registration fee, which buys access to your verified academic documents during and after the degree.²

What a year actually costs

St Andrews publishes something most universities do not — an itemised annual student budget, produced for US federal loan administration and estimated for 2026-2027:⁷

So roughly GBP 19,300 in rent, food and personal spending, or about GBP 24,200 once the one-off travel, equipment, visa and health-surcharge lines are counted — on top of tuition. St Andrews itself notes these are *“the maximum borrowing values and most students do not need to borrow the full amount.”*⁷

One caveat on reading that table across to this programme. Its own tuition line is GBP 29,325, giving a headline total of GBP 53,560⁷ — but that figure is an average across all taught postgraduate programmes, not the Management fee, and it sits below the Band B Overseas rate of GBP 31,450.² So the honest total for an overseas applicant to this programme is higher than the University’s published headline: about GBP 31,450 + GBP 24,235 ≈ GBP 55,700 on the 2026-2027 numbers, before any fee increase for a 2027 start. Funding, and the stacking question this profile can answer

St Andrews points applicants at a GREAT Scholarship, the Sanctuary Scholarship, St Leonard’s funding, the graduate discount and the School’s own management awards.¹

The St Andrews GREAT Scholarship is worth GBP 10,000 towards tuition, and the mechanics are tighter than the scheme’s national description suggests: seven scholarships, one allocated per eligible country, open to passport-holding permanent residents of France, Greece, Indonesia, Italy, Malaysia, Mexico or Spain, restricted to applicants with Overseas fee status on a full-time taught master’s, for one year only.⁵ The Business School is on the eligible-Schools list.⁵ The 2026-entry window opened on 4 November 2025 and closed on 24 May 2026, with decisions in the week of 22 June 2026, and recipients are expected to act as ambassadors for the University and the British Council.⁵ Note the sequencing: you apply for the award after submitting the course application, and “you do not need to wait until you have received an offer” to do so⁵ — but the University’s general awards policy requires that you hold an offer by the scholarship deadline or panel meeting.⁶

Can a GREAT award be held alongside a university scholarship? Our UK funding guide has had to leave that open, because the British Council’s own page returns HTTP 403 to us. Reading a participating university’s governing document settles it for that university, and St Andrews’ Awards General Terms and Conditions is readable: its only one-award-only rule is confined to needs-based money — “applicants applying to financial needs-based awards will normally only be awarded one needs-based award of the highest possible value” — and no clause bars a merit award from being held with another.⁶ Two duties attach instead. You must “declare any other scholarships or funding that have been secured in relation to the programme of study (excluding student loans)”, and once an award is issued you must “inform the Scholarships Team immediately if they are awarded any other external Awards or external funding”, because *“a written agreement between the University of St Andrews and the relevant external body may be required.”*⁶

Two honest caveats. This settles St Andrews, not the GREAT scheme — each participating university runs its own terms, and silence in one institution’s policy is not permission everywhere. And the published version of that policy carries an applicability date of 31 July 2025 and an expiry date of 31 July 2026, so the document St Andrews currently serves is past its own stated expiry;⁶ the substance is unlikely to have changed, but confirm in writing before you budget for two awards. Careers, and what St Andrews does not publish

St Andrews publishes no employment rate, no salary figure, no cohort size and no acceptance rate for this programme, so this profile quotes none. That is a real gap against the private schools in this catalogue, which measure and publish placement statistics, and you should weigh it rather than assume the numbers are simply unstated because they are good.

What the School does state is the destination — graduates working “in roles ranging from marketing and brand management, business development and analysis to consulting, sales, finance and investment, policy advice, supply chain management” across the public and private sectors — and it names four employers of MSc Management graduates: Credit Suisse Group, Google, IBM and KPMG.¹ Postgraduate taught students also get Masters Extra (MX), the Business School’s own careers and professional-development series of talks, workshops and networking events.¹

Where this programme fits

Take it if you hold a strong non-business bachelor’s and want a management qualification from one of the UK’s most selective universities without competing against business graduates; if a CMI-accredited professional credential alongside the degree is worth something to you; if you want a one-year UK master’s and can fund it largely from savings, since the scholarship route here is narrow; or if you would rather read a school’s actual published budget than an estimate.

Leave it if you already hold a business or management degree — you are not eligible, and the sibling International Business and Marketing MSc programmes are where St Andrews will send you. Leave it too if the money has to come from a scholarship: seven GREAT awards across the whole university, one per country, for seven countries is a narrow door, and there is no tuition-free route in the UK at all. And leave it if a ranked, recruiter-facing business-school brand is the point of the degree — St Andrews Business School does not appear in the Financial Times Masters in Management table, where London Business School, Warwick and Imperial do.
