Alliance Manchester Business School’s MSc Management is a one-year, English-taught Master in Management at the University of Manchester — a fast-track into business for graduates with little or no work experience. Overview

Alliance Manchester Business School (Alliance MBS) is one of the UK’s largest campus-based business and management schools, part of the University of Manchester.¹ Its MSc Management is a general-management master’s aimed at recent graduates: a one-year, full-time degree that “provides a fast-track into business for those with no previous experience,” covering the core of management — finance, marketing, organisational change, human resources, innovation and entrepreneurship.¹

It is, in short, a classic pre-experience MiM rather than a programme for experienced managers — a credible northern-England alternative to the London names for an applicant who wants a one-year, English-taught management degree at a globally ranked school.

Curriculum & Structure

The degree totals 180 credits across three semesters.¹ In semester one, students take four core units (60 credits); in semester two they choose four modules from a set of six (a further 60 credits), allowing some tailoring of the second term; and the final semester is a mandatory business research project — an applied case study of a real company or organisational issue.¹ The mix of a fixed core, limited elective choice, and a capstone project is typical of a strong UK conversion-style master’s.

Application & Deadlines

Entry is a first or upper-second-class honours degree (a UK 2:1 with a 60% average, or international equivalent); no business background is required.¹ The GMAT is not required, and a valid English-language test (such as IELTS) is needed unless you are exempt.¹ Manchester’s exemption is a country rule, not a first-language one, and this profile previously stated it the other way round: the university’s own page says that “If you are a national of one of the following countries (or have a bachelor’s degree or higher from one of these countries) you may be exempt from submitting further evidence of English language proficiency”, and that *“For Student Route visa purposes, the UKVI has a prescribed list of Majority English-speaking countries (this list is not defined by The University of Manchester).”*⁵ India, Pakistan, Nigeria, Ghana and Kenya are not on that list, so an entirely English-taught degree from any of them will not exempt you. Because the course is heavily oversubscribed, Manchester runs a staged admissions process with several selection deadlines through the year rather than one cut-off, so applying in an early stage improves the odds.¹

Proving English

Manchester’s central rule is a country rule, not a language-of-instruction rule: “If you are a national of one of the following countries (or have a bachelor’s degree or higher from one of these countries) you may be exempt from submitting further evidence of English language proficiency”, where the list is the UKVI one — *“For Student Route visa purposes, the UKVI has a prescribed list of Majority English-speaking countries (this list is not defined by The University of Manchester).”*⁵ So an English-medium degree from India, Pakistan, Nigeria or Bangladesh does not exempt you here, and exemption in any case sits with the admissions team. Confirm the course’s own threshold before booking a test.

Tuition & Funding

Manchester has not set the fee for the intake its own page advertises. Re-read on 5 September 2026, the course listing renders as MSc Management (2027 entry) and says in as many words that “fees for entry in 2027 have not yet been set”, then gives the previous year for reference: “the fees for the academic year beginning September 2026 were as follows — UK students (per annum): £20,000; International, including EU, students (per annum): £33,100”.⁴ So the figures below are the latest Manchester publishes, and they price the 2026 intake, not the 2027 one you would now be applying for. Read them as a floor. As a one-year degree, either figure is the full tuition, and Manchester states the quoted fee is “fully inclusive of tuition, administration and computational costs” — a useful sentence, because it means the number is not sitting on top of unnamed faculty charges.⁴ The international figure is broadly in line with the better-known UK one-year management master’s; weigh it against the QS top-25 global standing and Manchester’s lower cost of living relative to London.

Two further terms sit in the same fees section and are worth knowing before you compare offers.⁴ Graduates of the University of Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan University can claim a 10% Manchester Alumni Loyalty Discount on a master’s degree. And Manchester reserves the right to raise tuition by up to 7% each year — a clause that applies to courses lasting more than one year, so it does not reach this degree, but it does reach the two-year programmes you may be comparing it against.

Two charges fall due before the tuition does, and only one of them is refundable in any sense. Manchester states a £60 non-refundable application fee, payable when you apply.⁴ Then, “if you are successful in receiving an offer, you will be required to pay a tuition fee deposit of £2,500 by the deadline stated in your offer letter to confirm your place” — the school ties this to how oversubscribed the course is, and the deposit is non-refundable if you do not take up the place, though it is deducted from your tuition when you register.⁴ For an applicant holding several UK offers that is the real cost of a decision: the deposit deadline in your offer letter, not the course start date, is the point at which choosing Manchester stops being free — and it lands well before most continental European schools have finished their own rounds.

Career Outcomes

As a general-management degree, the MSc Management feeds a broad spread of first roles across consulting, finance, technology and the graduate schemes of large employers, supported by the University of Manchester’s scale and recruiter network.
