The Story Extraction Call · 1:1 with Mayank

Walk in with your essay questions. Walk out with an outline for every one.

Ninety minutes on a video call with me — HEC Paris MiM and former admissions jury member. I interview you until the story your applications should be telling is on the table. Then we outline every essay for your top three schools before we hang up.

Your story is already there. You just can’t see it from the inside. Getting it out is my job.

The problem

You don’t have a writing problem. You have a story problem.

  • No thread. You have the facts of your life, but nothing connects them — so every essay starts from zero.
  • The impressive version, not the true one. What you’ve done feels ordinary to you, so you reach for what sounds good.
  • Five schools, five unrelated essays. Every school asks something different, and you start over each time.
  • Drafts that sound like everyone else’s. They’re fine. A jury reading file after file can tell.
  • The clock. The next rounds close in weeks, and every week at a blank page is one you don’t get back.

None of that is fixed by better sentences. It’s fixed by knowing what you’re actually saying — and that is far easier to find with someone else asking the questions.

How it works

Three steps. The hard one is mine.

  1. 01Before the call

Book, and send me your questions.

Pick a slot and pay on the booking page. Then send me your top three schools, their essay prompts and your CV. I read all of it before we speak.

  2. 02On the call · 90 min

    Pointed questions, then outlines.

I interview you the way a jury reads a file: why this, why then, what did it cost you. We keep going until the thread through your story is obvious, then outline every essay, live.

  3. 03After the call

    You write, with backup.

Recording and typed outlines within 48 hours. One draft checked within 14 days. A week of email for when you get stuck.

10 calls

Why only 10, and why they end on 18 October

What goes into each call

Each call takes far more than ninety minutes. Around every one, I’m:

  • Reading your file before we speak
  • Writing up your outlines after the call
  • Checking one draft within 14 days
  • Answering your email for a week

Ten is the number I can do properly.

Booking closes

End of day, Paris time — or as soon as the tenth call is booked

Last call

Every call happens on or before this date

Still ahead after your call

That leaves you weeks to write. Between the last call and the end of January, the deadline tracker has 28 published rounds at 19 schools, including:

  • Università Bocconi R1 29 October
  • University of St. Gallen R1 4 November
  • Stockholm School of Economics Early 15 November
  • HEC Paris R2 26 November
  • INSEAD R2 8 December
  • London Business School R2 6 January

The exception is Round 1. INSEAD’s Round 1 closes on Tuesday 6 October and HEC Paris’s on Wednesday 7 October, both before the last call. If either is on your list, take one of the first slots on the calendar.

Fit

Who this is for, and who it isn’t

For you if

  • You’re applying this cycle to top European business schools — HEC Paris, ESSEC, ESCP, LBS, Bocconi, St. Gallen and schools like them.
  • You have a school list, or a shortlist, and the essay prompts that go with it.
  • You’ll answer uncomfortable questions honestly. That’s where the story is.

Not for you if

  • You want your essays written for you. I don’t write them: the words, and the application, stay yours.
  • You want a proofread of finished essays. This is the step before the writing.
  • You’re applying in a later cycle. Book when the prompts are in front of you.

Who’s asking

I’ve read applications from the other side of the table

Mayank Sehgal in HEC Paris cap and gown at his 2021 graduation
HEC Paris, Grande École — graduation, June 2021

I’m Mayank. I did the HEC Paris Master in Management (Grande École), graduating in 2021, and later sat on its admissions jury, reading files like the one you’re about to send.

I’ve mentored dozens of applicants to top European business schools, and my 50+ videos on studying in Europe have been watched more than two million times.

The essays that work aren’t the best-written ones. They’re the ones where the reader finishes knowing exactly who the applicant is.

What the jury side teaches you — and what the call is for.

Questions

Before you book

I’m applying in Round 1. Is there still time?

Yes, if you book one of the first slots. INSEAD’s Round 1 closes on Tuesday 6 October and HEC Paris’s on Wednesday 7 October, so the earlier your call, the more days you have between the outlines and the deadline.

What do I send before the call?

Your top three schools, their essay prompts, and your CV. I read all of it before we speak, so the ninety minutes go on your story rather than on catching me up.

What if I’m applying to more than three schools?

Choose the three that matter most. The call outlines their essays, and the story we find is the one you’ll tell everywhere else too; for the other schools, the work is fitting it to a new prompt.

Will you write my essays?

No. I ask the questions, help you see the story, and outline each essay with you. You write them. Schools expect your essays to be your own work, and the call is built so that they are.

I’ve already written drafts. Is it too late?

No — bring them. A draft that isn’t working is usually missing the story underneath it, and that is exactly what the call finds.

Where and when does the call happen?

On Google Meet, by Sunday 18 October. You pick a time on the booking page, which shows the open slots in your own time zone, and the call link arrives with your booking confirmation.

How do I get the guide?

I email you access after you book.

What if it doesn’t work for me?

You get your €200 back. That’s the Every-Essay Guarantee: if the call ends without an outline for every essay prompt you sent me, for up to three schools, tell me within seven days of the call and I refund it in full.

How is this different from the guide?

The guide teaches the system; the call applies it to you. With the guide you apply it yourself. On the call I apply it to you, live, one question at a time — and you get the guide as well.

Your story is already there. Let’s get it out.

Ninety minutes, an outline for every essay, and the Every-Essay Guarantee behind it.
